Despite its double name, obstetrics and gynecology is a single specialty and most of its practitioners are both obstetricians and gynecologists. Obstetrics deals with pregnancy and childbirth, the word probably deriving from the Latin obstare, to ‘stand before’: the midwife (obstetrix) ‘stood before’ the woman to receive the baby. Gynecology (from the Greek gyne, ‘woman’) deals mainly with reproductive disorders of non-pregnant women, but also includes problems in early pregnancy.
